14. Ever been in a fist fight? How did it happen?
Yes. When I was in middle school I played street hockey virtually every day. During the summer my brother, our friends, and I would be out there for countless hours. I got in a fight with one of my brother’s friends. I can’t exactly remember why, but it had something to do with hating every inch of him during that particular game of street hockey. No fist fights since then…
22. Are you good at imitating people?
I would say sometimes. I think I can do accents and imitate voices pretty well. David Bowie and George Takei are recent favorites. I have a tendency to adapt to the accent of wherever I am. For instance, when I went to Chicago to see some family, I found myself picking up on the little nuances and began speaking like them. It also happened when I worked with a couple people from Tennessee at a church camp years ago.
26. If you had to end every sentence with a loud animal noise for a whole day, what animal would you pick?
A saber-tooth tiger. There’s this button you can push at Denver’s Natural History Museum that imitates what the roar would have sounded like (since the saber-toothed tiger is extinct.) I would choose that sound, it’s almost other-worldly.
28. What physical feature do people compliment you most about? What aspect of your personality?
I hear a lot of compliments or comments about my hair. It’s course and thick, and is an animal unto itself. Whenever I get it cut, the people who cut it are always amazed by it. As far as personality, most of the compliments revolve around kindness. I do the best I can to treat everyone equally and kindly, and it’s a good policy. Intelligence is also in the running, people usually pick up on that once we’ve had a few conversations. I like to be able to talk to many people about many things, I would say I put considerable effort into that.
36. Did you have a favorite teacher in school?
I would say I had several influential teachers in school. One was Mr. Roberts, who actually died earlier this year. He taught AP European History to me in high school and made slide shows for each era of fine art from the Renaissance onward. He felt that art reflected the attitudes of the era, and it was clear that he felt passionately about that. Further, at the end of the year he gave each of his students a list of good books and movies to check out, as well as a personalized note. Mine said, “You’re interest in human justice is something you should always carry with you.”
38. Are you a dog person or a cat person?
I didn’t have pets growing up, but since then I’ve lived with and taken care of dogs and cats. I would have to say that I enjoy dogs more because I feel like I’ve made more of a connection with the dogs I’ve lived with. To this day, I enjoyed how the dog would greet me when I got home, usually late at night when no one else was up, and walking the dog is therapeutic for me and I think about my old roommate’s dog, Lady Francis (a beagle-basset hound-Jack Russell) whenever I need a little cheering up.
IF YOU’D LIKE TO ASK ME SOME QUESTIONS, YOU CAN FIND THE LIST HERE.
ugh, I am so sad for you guys about this, and for us fans! from what I know of you and Kevin, it is impossible that you were intentionally condescending or rude, you are wonderful guys and I am sorry about this. hugs to all of you!!! xoxoxoxoxo
Thank you Jules, this is an unfortunate situation that caught all of us off guard. There may be some silver lining though, it frees up Tuesdays for activities. There has been talk of returning to “Movie Tuesdays” since a local theater offers $5 tickets on Tuesdays. I am sure we’ll figure something out.
So sorry, men, but chin up: this sounds like a conspiracy with the real goal of breaking up a monopoly of intelligence. I remain confident in your status as gentlemen. ;)
I appreciate your confidence in my gentlemanly demeanor and that of my teammates, I never felt that was in question. We’ve thrown around several theories since last night, but I think that breaking the monopoly had something to do with it. Since we regularly won or placed, we received gift certificates on a regular basis ranging from $15 to $50. When five guys routinely win the $50 prize, it usually covers the entire tab. My guess is management didn’t like us since they weren’t making any money on us and a single complaint was all the ammunition necessary to exile us.
But DAN! You are 730 for 730 in awesomest guy of the day. (Two years. See what I did there?)
You’re setting a high standard for my awesomeness, I am not sure how I can sustain such a streak. On the other hand, if Cal Ripken Jr. can be awesome for 2632 consecutive games then I don’t see why I can’t be awesome for just as long. I am confident I can extend my awesomeness streak to day 731, then to day 732 and so on. Now that I think about it, I’d probably have an outstanding “Did something selfless/honorable/kind for someone else streak.” That streak would be close to Cal’s 2632 consecutive games played streak. Damn near untouchable.
but Dan! you’re totally amazing, so there’s that. I am hoping to get out to campus in the next couple of weeks, I’ll try to get a packet of info for you on the program there. hugs!! xoxoxoxo
Your imaginary hug is appreciated. This statistic warrants a “this man needs a hug” kind of response. Like any streak, its bound to end at some point. Just have to do what I do and it will happen. The grad school information would be helpful, especially since I am taking the GRE Tuesday.
I would give you SO MANY hugs, Dan, and as Ashley said, you deserved so many great things. I know hugs aren’t the same when they aren’t in person, but I promise that they’re there for you, anytime. xoxoxoxo
Thank you as always Jules. I’ll live vicariously through you this weekend as you visit Disneyland. I have many fantastic memories of the “Happiest Place on Earth” and my mom actually worked there for many years (although working at Disneyland isn’t the same as visiting Disneyland.) I’d like to revisit the park as an adult, especially since my love of Star Wars has fully developed and they just remade Star Tours. I distinctly remember going on that ride. In line I remember seeing C-3P0, but I couldn’t remember where I had seen him before. That was a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away…)
hahaha excellent example!
Indeed, much can be learned from Indiana Jones. My favorite is that releasing the power of God will destroy the wicked…or the people who don’t turn around and shut their eyes.
Your words are beautifully chosen, and it is my hope to see you achieve both what you want and need, personally and professionally. You deserve many great things. :)
Your sentiment is appreciated. I have received similar sentiments from many of my peers. I will admit that I have focused on my volunteer duties to the point that I may have lost some perspective on the big picture. I do think taking a step back and re-examining things will help.
you are pretty fantastic, Dan!! I fully believe you will fulfill your dreams. xoxoxoxo
I love so much that the internet has fallen in love with Jennifer Lawrence, she seems fantastic. the boy from Billy Elliot also seems awesome. I should also point out that you are awesome! xoxoxoxo
It does appear that Jennifer Lawrence is everywhere and I would expect that for the star of a movie who had the third best opening weekend in history. Landing a role in a movie like The Hunger Games will do that for someone. She seems pretty cool and goofy to me, so I hope that initial impression isn’t ruined by scandalous nonsense.
Also, thank you for your continued support of my awesomeness. Right now I find myself thinking “I need a hug” frequently, and your imaginary internet hugs do help. I can best describe the feeling as having a poster of myself, looking distraught, with the caption “This man needs a hug” at the foot of the poster. These things would be everywhere in my imaginary world, like propaganda posters from WWII.
the person i like and why i like them.
Jules, you seem to want to know about my romantic life. I can’t say there’s a certain person I have in mind at the moment, just a few that tend to enter my mind and then leave the next day. The two or three that I think about tend to be more outgoing, lively, people. It’s been such a long time since I personally interacted with them that it’s difficult to say what they’re actually like. Part of the reason I’m interested in these people is because I don’t know enough about them.
a famous person i’ve been compared to
You know, I cannot think of anyone famous that I’ve been compared to. A while ago, there was doppelganger week on facebook. I posted a picture of Jemaine Clement from “Flight of the Conchords.” I don’t know if I’ve been compared to him though, although I admit I could do a lot worse.
5 things within touching distance.
Chair, sewing machine, candle, adding machine, portable mouse.
story of my first kiss.
It was ages ago. I want to say it was one of the members of the show choir I belonged to when I was in middle school. I don’t remember which one it was because it happened during a round of “Spin the bottle” in my friend’s basement. I remember their names and what kind of people they were then. I was much more quiet, shy, and awkward at the time. I think I kissed three or four of them that day although I can’t recall who was first. If I had my choice it would probably be this one girl, Megan. Looking back, I think she was into me.
Question, in the back left: Sir, could we have a guarantee that future tumblr sabbaticals will be scratched from the agenda? I think we’re all looking for a little hope. This is it. Stay with us! :) (Also HUZZAH!)
Well, I don’t want to say never. That said, I do think that my tumblr time benefits me more often than not, so I anticipate that another one won’t happen for some time. I think you all can expect me to be posting regularly to a standard of quality that I’ve established over the past few months.
You’ve been missed, dude. I’m so glad that you’re back. Hello.
I am so happy to read this!! you’ve been missed. welcome back!! xoxoxoxo
I am glad that you’ve missed my stuff, I do what I can. Like I said before, working on this stuff keeps me sharp. I did purchase Mass Effect 3, much like Kevin, although I don’t plan on playing it at any great length any time soon. That is good news for all of you, because a game like that has a tendency to occupy all of your waking hours. I see tumblr as a way to be productive, a way to practice skills that I want to highlight as I pursue my career path.
Dan’s announcement:
“After some time away, I am pleased to report I will resume my regular posts. I found that while away from tumblr, I became distracted by things that I didn’t feel were productive. My tumblr posts allow me to write everyday, which is something I wish to do and enjoy. It was one of those instances where I found the grass wasn’t greener as I shifted my focus. While finding work remains the first priority, I feel that the rest of me works better when I am practicing my writing craft on a daily basis. I am glad to be back and hope you are as well, and I am looking forward to sharing what I know and love with all of you again. I will be happy to answer any questions.”
Hi friends. As Jules can attest, Teefury has awesome t-shirts featuring a variety of clever, geeky designs available every day for $10. Since I know several of you like Dr. Who, take a look at today’s design. You’ll have about 12 hours to act on it, otherwise it will vanish forever.
Also, this I am still on a sabbatical, but felt a few of you would be interested in today’s t-shirt.
