Trivia Recap Mardi Gras/Grand Prize Edition
A controversy overshadowed the win by “We don’t do cocaine but we like the way it smells” at Boone’s Tavern Trivia Night Tuesday. “Cocaine” answered a tiebreaker question to clinch victory after scoring 57 points in three rounds. In a Louisiana/Mardi Gras themed Trivia Night, “Cocaine’s” estimate of 1.2 million sq. miles for the size of the Louisiana Purchase was closer than the answer from “That guy’s” team.
The controversy surrounded the Grand Prize, which was supposed to be awarded at the conclusion of the nightly competition. “Cocaine” held the lead over “That guy’s” team at the start of the night, and both teams matched points for the evening, which would have meant “Cocaine” secured the Grand Prize.
The trivia overlord informed “Cocaine” of its lead at the beginning of the night, and mentioned at the conclusion of the game that “That guy’s” team mentioned they played under a different name several weeks ago, which may have affected the overall standings. The trivia overlord mentioned he would recalculate the points and results. According to the rules, the overall winner is the first team to 500 points, something the “Cocaine” and “That Guy’s” team would have reached weeks ago. The issue at hand is who reached the milestone first.
The Grand Prize consists of inter-tubing passes to Winter Park, and possible tickets to the Colorado Rockies.
“I’m glad we won tonight, but this Grand Prize situation leaves a sour taste in my mouth,” Dan said, “We took care of business. We did everything we were supposed to do, and you always want to be in a position to control your own destiny like we were. If we end up losing the overall title because of some technicality, I’m going to be pretty upset. Man for man we’re the best team in the competition, and we’ve played consistently for three months. It’s really hard for me to accept that the Prize I thought we earned tonight may not be ours after all.”
Final results will be available in time for the next competition.
Again, the pre-game preparation paid off as the team researched topics like Mardi Gras, New Orleans, and President’s Day. One notable example was the meaning behind the three colors of Mardi Gras beads: purple (justice), gold (power), and green (faith).
“Cocaine’s” versatility shined again, as each player contributed in their area of expertise and the team logically worked through a couple questions, like the tiebreaker around the size of the Louisiana Purchase and a question about the singer Chubby Checkers, who derived the name from musician and New Orleans native Fats Domino.
“That guy” was channeling his spirit animal, the wolf, by wearing it on a nature scene t-shirt. He was also clad in his usual backwards Joe Camel hat with the bill turned upwards, covering the hot mess of hair beneath it.
“Cocaine” won the first round, meaning they have won at least one round - and a pitcher of beer - every week with the exception of two. Again, early round play was critical as they built a lead they never relinquished.
“Cocaine’s” five person set up gives them the highest PPP (points per player) in the league. Tuesday’s score of 57 game them a PPP of 11.4. “That guy’s” team had nine players, giving them a PPP of 6.3.
“We don’t do cocaine but we like the way it smells” competes next Tuesday at Boone’s Tavern Trivia Night at 8 p.m.
